Helping Children Find Big Ideas in Small Surprises

Imagination can turn a rainy day into an adventure

A change in weather can feel disappointing when children expected to play outside a certain way. Fuzzi and Gram’s tiny umbrella shows that one small object can inspire a completely new kind of play. Invite children to wonder, “What could we make with what we have?” and let their answers guide the adventure.

On a rainy day, create a pretend parade indoors or, with appropriate rain gear and adult supervision, enjoy safe puddle play outside. A scarf can become a parade banner, a spoon can be a drumstick, and an umbrella can be the parade’s special decoration. Celebrate creative thinking with phrases like, “You made a new plan,” “That is a funny idea,” or “You turned the rain into fun.”
