Early Reading Skills

Helping children develop early reading skills is one of the most important ways parents can support their child’s future learning. Simple daily activities—such as reading bedtime stories, pointing out letters on signs, or talking about the pictures in a book—help children connect sounds with words and words with meaning. These interactions not only build vocabulary but also foster a love for stories and curiosity about language. Parents can model excitement about reading, showing that books are fun and valuable, which encourages children to imitate the same attitude.

One great example of a highly-rated, beginner reader set is Bob Books - Set 1. This book series is loved by educators, parents and children!

Beyond books, everyday moments are full of opportunities to strengthen early literacy. Singing songs, playing rhyming games, and asking children to retell parts of a story all support phonemic awareness, which is a key step toward becoming a confident reader.

By keeping learning playful, positive, and consistent, parents give their children a strong foundation that will make the transition to school smoother and more enjoyable.
