Helping Children Learn Through Building Together
Measuring and shapes make building a learning adventure
Building projects give children a natural reason to compare length, notice shapes, and think about how pieces fit together. Benny’s reading bench shows that math can live inside everyday play. Use words such as long, short, wide, narrow, square, and rectangle while children build with blocks, boxes, or other safe materials.
Invite children to be part of the plan by measuring with a ruler, comparing two objects, or choosing where a pretend bench should go. Building together also creates chances to practice teamwork: taking turns, listening to another idea, and adjusting when something does not fit. Praise the process with phrases like, “You noticed the difference,” “You helped us measure,” or “You worked together to solve it.”
