Map words help children describe where things are
Captain Coral’s mixed-up compass makes map words useful and playful. Terms such as left, right, near, far, behind, and beside help children describe where they are and understand how to get somewhere. As you read, ask, “Which way should Fuzzi and Gram go?” or “What sign could help the visitor find home?”
Make a tiny treasure map of a familiar room or use simple directions during a walk: “Take two steps forward,” “Turn left at the chair,” or “Look beside the door.” Let your child take turns being the guide and the traveler. Celebrate their growing spatial language with words like, “You used a clear direction,” “You noticed that sign,” or “You helped me find the way.”
