Helping Children Learn Through Maps and Directions
Maps turn familiar places into learning adventures
Following a map helps children practice noticing shapes, landmarks, and simple directions such as left, right, near, and far. Fuzzi and Gram’s harbor adventure shows that maps do not have to be complicated to be useful. Point out landmarks in everyday places and try language like, “The playground is next to the big tree,” or “Let’s turn right at the mailbox.”
Make a simple treasure map together using paper, crayons, and a few familiar objects. Add a shape for each stop—perhaps a circle for a table or a triangle for a pillow fort—then let your child follow the clues. Celebrate careful observation with phrases like, “You noticed the landmark,” “You followed the direction,” or “You solved the next clue.”
