Helping Children Explore Their Own Creative Ideas
There is more than one wonderful way to make something
Making art or building something together is a chance for children to see that their ideas do not have to match anyone else’s. Fuzzi and Gram’s kites can be different colors, shapes, and patterns because every child notices something different in the sky. Offer choices and open questions, such as, “What kind of kite would you make for that cloud?” rather than showing one right answer.
When a design does not work the first time, help children treat it as part of the creative process. They can add a tail, choose a new material, or try again with a different shape. Celebrate experimentation with phrases like, “You had a new idea,” “You kept trying,” or “Your kite is one of a kind.” This builds flexible thinking and pride in their own creations.
