Growing Early Math Skills Through Everyday Clues
Shapes, sizes, and patterns help children investigate
Fuzzi and Gram use careful observation to follow the mysterious footprint trail. Comparing big and small marks, spotting shapes, and noticing what repeats are early math skills children can use while they play and explore. As you read, ask, “What do you notice about this footprint?” or “Which clue looks the same as the one before it?”
Go on a clue hunt together at home or outside. Look for footprints, leaf shapes, buttons, tiles, or objects that can be sorted by size, color, or shape; then make a simple pattern such as leaf, rock, leaf, rock. Let your child explain their thinking, and respond with words like, “You noticed a pattern,” “You found a way to compare them,” or “That is a thoughtful clue.”
