Making Room for Every Friend’s Pace

Belonging does not depend on being the fastest

Sammy’s worry about slowing others down is a feeling many children recognize. Fuzzi and Gram show that a group can adjust its pace and still have a wonderful time together. As you read, ask, “How do you think Sammy feels when he worries?” and “What could friends say to help someone feel included?”

Look for everyday moments to practice taking a calm pace, such as walking to the car, cleaning up, or waiting for a turn. Help your child notice when their body needs more time and give them language to ask for it: “Can we go slowly?” or “I need a minute.” Reinforce kindness toward themselves and others with words like, “Everyone can go at their own pace,” “You waited patiently,” or “You made space for your friend.”
