Helping Children Discover That Courage Comes From Within

First-day nerves are normal

Many young children feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety before school, a new class, a birthday party, a lesson, or any unfamiliar experience. Those feelings may show up as a “fluttery tummy,” trouble sleeping, repeated questions, clinginess, irritability, or sudden worries about small details. Fuzzi's nervous stomach gives children a simple and non-scary way to recognize what anxiety can feel like in the body.

Rather than trying to erase nervous feelings, parents can help children name and understand them. You might say, “Your tummy feels wiggly because this is new,” or, “You can feel nervous and still take the next step.” This teaches children that discomfort is not a warning that they must stop. It is often a sign that they are doing something important for the first time.
