Small setbacks are chances to practice self-control
When children are excited to help, play, or be in charge, a small problem can suddenly feel very big. Gram’s empty napkin supply gives parents a simple way to talk about what happens when a plan changes: it is okay to feel rushed or frustrated, but pausing before reacting helps everyone. You can name the feeling and the moment by saying, “That did not go the way you expected. Let’s take a breath and figure out the next step.”
Practice a three-step problem-solving routine together: pause, make a plan, and try a kind solution. For example, a child can ask an adult for help, use a substitute, or let others know they need a moment. Praise the process rather than perfect results: “You stopped and thought,” “You made a helpful plan,” or, “You were kind while you solved the problem.” These small moments build patience, flexibility, and confidence.
Comfort objects can help—but they are not the source of courage
Fuzzi's backpack acts as a transitional object: something familiar and comforting that helps him move from the safety of home into a new environment. A favorite backpack, bracelet, family photo, stuffed animal, or note from a parent can provide real emotional support. There is nothing wrong with allowing a child to use a comforting object when facing change.
The important distinction is how adults talk about that object. Instead of saying, “This will make sure nothing bad happens,” try, “This can remind you that you are loved and prepared.” The first message suggests that safety depends on magic or perfect outcomes. The second helps the child connect the object to an inner resource: memory, connection, and confidence. Fuzzi eventually realizes that the backpack did not speak for him, make friends for him, or solve the problem when it went missing. It simply traveled beside him while he did those things himself.
Preparation builds confidence
Before school, Fuzzi packs a pencil, a snack, and a family photo. This routine matters. Preparation gives children a sense of control when the larger situation feels uncertain. Parents can support this by involving children in small, concrete tasks: choosing clothes, packing a bag, practicing a morning routine, looking at a picture of the school, or rehearsing what to say when meeting someone new.
Keep preparation practical rather than perfectionistic. The goal is not to guarantee that the day will go exactly as planned. In reality, friendship often starts with a small point of connection: liking the same game, sitting nearby, helping with a task, or asking a simple question.
Practice a few child-friendly conversation starters before a new social situation: “What are you building?” “Can I play too?” “I like that book.” “Do you want to sit with me?” Role-play both positive and neutral responses so your child learns that one interaction does not determine the whole day. A child can try again with someone else, choose another activity, or ask an adult for support.
Supportive adults help children solve problems
When the backpack disappears, Coach Hopper does not dismiss Fuzzi's feelings or immediately fix everything for him. She stays calm, offers a reasonable explanation, and helps him search step by step. This models co-regulation: an adult lends calm and structure until the child can think clearly again.
When your child loses something or becomes overwhelmed, begin with connection: “I can see that you are worried.” Then move to a plan: “Let's remember where you had it last,” “Who can we ask?” or, “What is the first place we should check?” This approach validates the feeling without treating the situation as a catastrophe. It also teaches that asking for help is a capable response, not a failure of independence.
Turn the story into a family conversation
After reading, ask questions that focus on Fuzzi's choices rather than simply testing recall. Try: “What did Fuzzi think the backpack would do?” “What did Fuzzi actually do by himself?” “Who helped him?” “When did he feel nervous?” “What brave step did he take anyway?” You can also ask your child to imagine another ending: “What could Fuzzi have done if the backpack had stayed lost until tomorrow?”
A simple follow-up activity is to make a “bravery backpack” on paper. Inside it, draw or write things your child can carry within themselves: taking a breath, remembering a loved one, asking a teacher, using kind words, trying again, or finding a quiet place. This shifts the idea of security from a single object to a collection of skills and relationships.
The lasting lesson
Children do not need to believe that they will never feel scared, lose something, make a mistake, or have an awkward moment. They need to believe that they can handle those moments with support. Fuzzi's backpack is still special at the end of the story, but it no longer carries the responsibility for making his day go well. Fuzzi now understands that he can prepare, breathe, speak, play, seek help, and recover from a problem.
That is the foundation of healthy confidence: not “Everything will always work out,” but “Even when something unexpected happens, I have skills, people, and choices that can help me.”

"What if I don't make any friends?" Fuzzi whispered to himself. He pulled his blanket up to his chin and looked at the empty backpack hook by his door. It looked very, very empty.
The next morning, Fuzzi's neighbor Gus the dog bounded over, tail wagging with excitement. "Come on, Fuzzi! Let's go to the Market before school and find you the perfect backpack!"
At Fuzziland Market, Manny showed Fuzzi shelves and shelves of backpacks — red ones, blue ones, striped ones, and spotted ones. Fuzzi didn't know which one to pick.
Then Fuzzi spotted it — a little yellow backpack. "This one!" Fuzzi said, his whiskers twitching with excitement. "I bet this backpack is lucky!"
Gus laughed. "A lucky backpack? I've never heard of that! But it sure is a great backpack, Fuzzi." Manny wrapped it up carefully, and Fuzzi hugged it all the way home.
That morning, Fuzzi packed his lucky backpack with a pencil, a snack, and a little photo of his family. "As long as I have my lucky backpack," Fuzzi told himself, "nothing can go wrong."
Fuzzi put on his lucky backpack and walked with Gus all the way to Fuzziland School. His tummy still fluttered, but he patted his backpack for courage.
At school, Professor Hoo the owl greeted every student at the door with a warm smile. "Welcome, welcome!" he hooted. "Come in and find a seat, little ones."
Fuzzi found a seat next to Toby Turtle. But when Professor Hoo asked the class to share something about themselves, Fuzzi's paws suddenly felt very cold and his voice got stuck in his throat.
Fuzzi squeezed the strap of his lucky backpack tight. He took a deep breath, and slowly, the words came out. "My name is Fuzzi, and I like exploring new places!"
Everyone clapped, and Toby Turtle smiled. "I like exploring too!" he said. Fuzzi felt a warm, proud feeling bubble up inside him — maybe school wasn't so scary after all.
At recess, Coach Hopper blew her whistle at the Playground and invited everyone to play a game of tag. Fuzzi hung his backpack carefully on a hook and dashed off to join in.
Fuzzi ran and laughed and made new friends — Chloe Chipmunk, Molly Mouse, and Daisy Deer all wanted him on their team. It was the most fun Fuzzi had had in a long time.
When recess ended, Fuzzi hurried back to get his backpack — but the hook was empty! Fuzzi's ears drooped. "My lucky backpack is gone!"
Fuzzi felt his tummy flutter again, worse than before. Without his lucky backpack, would everything go wrong? He looked around the playground, but it was nowhere to be seen.
"Don't worry, Fuzzi," said Coach Hopper gently. "Let's ask around the school together. Sometimes things get moved by accident, that's all." She took Fuzzi's paw, and they went to check the Library first.
At the Library, Millie Moose the librarian smiled. "A little yellow backpack? Benny Beaver found it by the fence and brought it straight to me for safekeeping!"
Fuzzi hugged his backpack tight and then realized something wonderful. "It wasn't the backpack that helped me make friends and speak up today," he said. "It was ME being brave — the backpack was just along for the ride!"
That afternoon, Fuzzi and Gus walked home together, backpack and all. "Best first day ever," Fuzzi said with a happy sigh. And even without any luck at all, Fuzzi knew tomorrow would be a great day too.
