Helping Children Choose Safe Paths and Ask for Help

Bravery includes stopping when something is not safe

Children often want to take a shortcut when they are excited to get somewhere. Gram’s stuck moment reminds them that the quickest path is not always the safest one. Help children practice pausing to look around, choosing the clear path, and checking with a trusted adult when they are unsure.

Asking for help is a brave choice, especially after a mistake. Give children simple words to use: “I’m stuck,” “I need help,” or “Which way is safer?” Notice and praise the behavior you want them to repeat: “You stopped before it got harder,” “You asked for help,” or “You chose the safe path.”
