Helping Children Feel Safe When Something Sounds Scary

Calm investigation can make a worry feel smaller

Strange sounds can feel much bigger when children do not know what caused them. Fuzzi’s sink sound gives families a way to practice taking a breath, staying near a trusted adult, and looking for a simple explanation together. You might say, “That sound surprised you. Let’s listen from a safe spot and ask an adult to help us figure it out.”

Teach children that sinks, pipes, and repairs are grown-up jobs. They can help safely by telling an adult what they heard, staying out of any wet area, and waiting while the adult checks the problem. Praise their safe choices with words such as, “You told me right away,” “You stayed back from the water,” or “You asked for help when something seemed wrong.”
