Helping Children Pause and Follow Safety Directions
Stopping first makes it easier to make a safe choice
Children often race ahead when they are excited, curious, or eager to explore. Gram’s moment in Whisper Woods offers a calm way to practice what to do when they are unsure where to go: stop, stay where they are, look and listen, then wait for help or follow a trusted adult’s directions. Simple words such as, “Freeze your feet and listen for my voice,” can be easy for a child to remember.
Practice this skill in ordinary moments, such as at the park, in a store, or while walking together. Try a gentle game of “stop and listen,” then praise the behavior you want to build: “You stopped right away,” “You waited for directions,” or “You stayed close when the path changed.” Rehearsing calm responses helps children build self-control and confidence without making safety feel scary.
