Helping Children Build Healthy and Safe Kitchen Habits
Cooking together is a chance to practice healthy choices
Inviting children into the kitchen can make trying wholesome foods feel exciting and familiar. Like Chef Bella, adults can offer simple choices such as fruit, oats, or other nutritious mix-ins and let children help measure, stir, or arrange ingredients. Talk about what each ingredient does—“These berries add color and flavor”—so healthy choices become part of the fun instead of a rule.
Kitchen safety works best when children have clear, age-appropriate jobs and a caring adult nearby. Practice washing hands before cooking, using child-safe tools, keeping fingers away from hot surfaces, and asking before touching anything unfamiliar. Specific praise—“You waited for help with the oven,” or “You washed your hands before we started”—helps children remember that being careful is an important part of being a great helper.
