Stopping to think can help children choose a safe, kind next step
Officer Otis’s stop-and-think sign gives Fuzzi and Gram a simple reminder to pause when a choice feels tricky. Instead of acting right away, they can notice what is happening, think about what might happen next, and choose a safer or kinder response. As you read, ask, “What did Fuzzi and Gram stop to think about?” or “What choice did the pause help them make?”
Create a simple family stop-and-think cue, such as a hand signal or a small sign, to use before common tricky moments like grabbing, rushing, or arguing. Practice the steps when everyone is calm: stop, take a breath, think of two choices, and choose one that is safe and kind. Reinforce the skill with words like, “You paused before choosing,” “You thought about what could happen,” or “You made a safe choice.”
