Helping Children Make Play Feel Fun for Everyone

Imagination can make room for every kind of player

A race does not have to be about who is fastest. Like Fuzzi, Gram, and Coach Hopper, children can use their imagination to create a course with silly stops, helpful teammates, colorful signs, and many ways to reach the finish line. This gives children practice thinking creatively about the rules of a game and noticing what helps everyone feel excited to participate.

Try making your own family racecourse with pillows, chalk, paper arrows, or stuffed animals. Invite each child to add one playful idea, then choose a finish line that everyone can cross together. Celebrate creativity and cooperation with words such as, “That was a clever idea,” “You made space for everyone,” or “We had more fun because we worked together.”
