Helping Children Feel Comfortable Joining In
Quiet moments can still feel warm and connected
New group experiences can feel a little uncomfortable when children are not sure what to say or do next. Fuzzi and Gram’s quiet campfire gives families a gentle way to talk about those moments: a pause does not mean something is wrong. You can reassure your child by saying, “It is okay to listen for a while. When you are ready, you can share a little thought or ask someone a question.”
Help children practice joining a conversation with small, low-pressure steps: make eye contact, listen to a friend’s story, then offer one sentence of their own. At home, try a family story circle where each person shares a favorite memory, a silly idea, or one kind thing from the day. Specific encouragement—“You listened so carefully,” or “Your story helped everyone feel close”—builds confidence and shows children that their voice belongs in the group.
