Helping Children Feel Safe in New Overnight Routines

Familiar routines can make a new place feel more comfortable

Sleeping away from home can bring up excitement and worry at the same time. Fuzzi’s first sleepover shows children that nervous feelings are normal and that a few familiar routines can help. Packing a favorite comfort item, reading a usual bedtime story, or following the same steps for pajamas and brushing teeth can make a new place feel more predictable.

Before a sleepover, talk through the plan together and give children simple words to use if they need support: “I miss home,” “Can I call my grown-up?” or “Can we sit together for a minute?” Remind them that asking for comfort is okay. Praise their brave steps—“You tried something new,” or “You told someone how you felt”—whether they stay the whole night or decide they need to come home.
