Helping Children Turn Surprises into New Ideas

Flexible thinking helps children keep play moving

When an expected ingredient, toy, or plan is missing, children may first feel disappointed. Fuzzi and Gram’s silly pancake stack shows that a surprise can become the beginning of a new idea. Help children pause and wonder, “What else could we try?” so they learn that a change does not have to end the fun.

Try a playful “make-do challenge” at home: choose a familiar activity, then remove one ordinary item and invent a new way to continue. You might build with paper instead of blocks or make a pretend topping from craft supplies. Celebrate creative problem-solving with words such as, “You found another way,” “That was a funny idea,” or “You kept the fun going.”
