Turning Everyday Materials Into Big Ideas

Simple materials can inspire teamwork, problem-solving, and imaginative play

Fuzzi and Gram’s big box fort shows how an ordinary object can become anything children imagine. Building together gives children chances to share ideas, solve small problems, and create a story as the fort takes shape. As you read, ask, “What would your box fort be?” or “What would you add to make room for a friend?”

Save a few clean boxes, paper tubes, or fabric scraps for a build-and-play day. Let your child lead the design while you help with any safe cutting, taping, or sturdy building they need. Celebrate their process with words like, “You found a creative way to use that box,” or “Your idea helped make the fort even better.”
