Helping Children Turn a Mess into a New Idea
Creative thinking can help when plans change
Accidents and unexpected messes can feel frustrating, especially when children had a picture in their minds of how something would turn out. Fuzzi and Gram’s runaway paint shows that after a safe clean-up plan, a surprise can sometimes become the start of a new creative idea. Ask, “What could we make with this now?” to invite flexible thinking.
Make art with washable, non-toxic supplies and set out a smock or old shirt before you begin. If a spill happens, children can step back, tell an adult, and help with a safe job such as bringing paper towels. Once the area is ready, invite everyone to add a mark to a shared picture and celebrate with phrases like, “You found a new idea,” “We made it together,” or “Every color has a place.”
