Learning Through Observation and Simple Testing

Noticing wind and water helps young problem-solvers improve an idea

Fuzzi and Gram build boats, watch what happens in the harbor, and use what they notice to make their designs better. This playful race introduces children to early science skills: observing, trying an idea, and changing it after learning something new. As you read, ask, “What did Fuzzi and Gram notice about the wind or water?” or “What could they change to help a boat move?”

Try a simple boat experiment together using a shallow tub of water and safe, lightweight materials such as paper, corks, or recycled containers. Ask your child to predict which boat will float or move best, then test one small change at a time. Reinforce the process with words like, “You looked closely,” “You tested your idea,” or “You learned something from what happened.”
