Welcoming Someone New With Care and Curiosity

Listening helps us offer the kind of welcome someone needs

A new neighbor may feel excited, shy, nervous, or all three at once. Fuzzi and Gram show that a thoughtful welcome starts with listening instead of assuming what another person wants. As you read, ask, “How might the new kid be feeling?” or “What could Fuzzi and Gram say to learn what would help?”

Practice welcoming language together, such as, “Hi, I’m glad you’re here,” “Would you like to play?” and “What would make you feel comfortable?” Talk about how a new friend might prefer a quiet hello, a tour, a game, or some space. Encourage empathy with words like, “You listened carefully,” “You made room for their choice,” or “That was a kind welcome.”
