Learning That Helpful Starts With Asking

Good intentions work best when we notice what others need

The little dragon wants to be helpful, but he learns that jumping in without asking can sometimes make a problem bigger. Fuzzi and Gram give children a simple model: pause, ask what is needed, and listen to the answer. As you read, ask, “What could the dragon say before helping?” or “How can we tell what kind of help someone wants?”

Practice asking before helping during everyday routines. Encourage phrases such as, “Would you like help?” “What can I do?” and “Can I try?” Let your child know that a person may say yes, no, or ask for something different. Reinforce thoughtful support with words like, “You checked first,” “You listened to what they needed,” or “That was a kind way to help.”
