Helping Children Turn Simple Things into Big Ideas
Open-ended materials invite creative thinking
Boxes, ribbons, paper, and found objects can become almost anything in a child’s imagination. Fuzzi and Gram’s parade shows that play does not need a perfect toy or a set of instructions to be meaningful. Offering a few simple materials and asking, “What could this be?” gives children room to invent, experiment, and make their own choices.
Shared pretend play can also make a new person feel welcome. Invite children to make a parade, a neighborhood, or a tiny celebration together, then help them practice including others with phrases like, “Do you want to add an idea?” or “You can be in our parade.” Notice cooperation and imagination: “You found a creative use for that box,” or “You made room for a new friend.”
