Building Listening Skills With Beginning Sounds
Hearing the first sound in a word supports early reading
Fuzzi’s treasure box turns listening for beginning sounds into a library mystery. Hearing that “ball” and “book” start with /b/ helps children connect the sounds they say to the words they will someday read and write. As you read, stretch out a few first sounds together and ask, “What sound do you hear at the beginning of this word?”
Make your own small sound treasure box with a few familiar, safe objects from around the house. Say each object’s name slowly and invite your child to group items that begin with the same sound, such as a cup and a cat toy. Keep the game light and playful, praising attempts with words like, “You listened closely,” “You heard that first sound,” or “You found a matching sound.”
