Turning Unexpected Changes Into New Ideas

Flexible thinking can keep play moving forward

When the wind changes Fuzzi and Gram’s festival plans, they choose to notice what is possible instead of giving up. Children build creative confidence when they see that a surprise can become the start of a different kind of fun. As you read, ask, “What could Fuzzi and Gram do with the flying decorations?” or “What new game would you make from a windy day?”

Try a simple “change the plan” game at home: begin a drawing, block build, or pretend game, then add a playful surprise such as using only one color or turning the tower into a bridge. Let your child decide what happens next. Encourage their flexibility with words like, “You found a new idea,” “You changed the plan and kept going,” or “That surprise made your game even better.”
