Creating Big Fun From Everyday Materials
Open-ended play builds imagination and confidence
Gram and Fuzzi turn ordinary recycled odds and ends into a whole carnival, showing children that creative play does not need special supplies. Cardboard, paper tubes, cups, and blankets can become games, tickets, signs, or silly prizes when children get to lead the ideas. As you read, ask, “What carnival game would you invent?” or “What could this object become?”
Set up a small make-believe carnival together using safe household recyclables and toys. Invite your child to design a game, make a sign, decide how players win, and adapt it so different friends can join. Keep the focus on experimenting rather than getting it right, with encouragement like, “You found a new use for that,” “You made a game everyone can try,” or “Your idea made us laugh.”
