A friendly hello can be gentle and unhurried
Meeting someone new can feel exciting for one child and overwhelming for another. Fuzzi and Gram learn that kindness includes noticing what a new neighbor might need: space, a quiet voice, or time before joining in. As you read, ask, “How do you think the neighbor feels?” and “What are some gentle ways we can say hello?”
Practice low-pressure greetings together, such as a wave, a smile, a drawing left with an adult’s help, or “Hi, I’m glad you’re here.” Explain that people may not be ready to talk right away, and that is okay. Encourage your child with words like, “You gave them room to choose,” “That was a thoughtful hello,” or “You noticed what might help them feel comfortable.”
