Learning Calm Ways to Wait With Others

Small strategies can help children manage a wiggly waiting body

Gram’s body feels full of wiggles while he waits at Bluebird Café, and his movement begins to bother the people around him. With Fuzzi’s help, he practices simple ways to wait that keep both his body and the line more comfortable. As you read, ask, “How did Gram’s wiggling affect the line?” or “What calm waiting idea helped him?”

Before a time when waiting may be hard, help your child choose one or two quiet waiting tools: standing with feet together, taking slow breaths, counting nearby colors, or gently squeezing their hands. Practice the tools briefly at home and remind them that waiting is a skill, not something they must do perfectly right away. Reinforce success with words like, “You kept your body calm,” “You remembered your waiting tool,” or “You helped the line feel comfortable for everyone.”
