Helping Children Make Play Feel Kind and Inclusive
Noticing who feels left out is an important friendship skill
Fast-moving games can sometimes leave a child unsure how to join or worried that the rules are not fair. Fuzzi’s choice to notice a friend’s feelings gives children a model for looking beyond their own fun. Adults can ask, “Did everyone get a turn?” or “What could make this game easier for everyone to enjoy?”
Help children practice simple, kind changes to a game: use a smaller hiding area, take turns being the seeker, offer a clue, or pause so everyone understands the rules. Encourage phrases like, “Do you want to play?” “Let’s make a new rule,” and “We can help you.” Praise inclusive choices with words like, “You noticed your friend,” “You made room for everyone,” or “You helped the game feel fair.”
