Building Number Order Through Hands-On Problem Solving
Putting numbers in sequence helps children make sense of time
Fixing the Clock Tower gives Fuzzi and Gram a meaningful reason to put number gears in order. Children learn that number order is more than reciting a list: each number has a place, and moving one can change what comes next. As you read, invite your child to point out any numbers they notice and ask, “Which number should come next?” or “How can we check that the gears are in the right order?”
Try making a simple number line with paper circles, blocks, or favorite toys. Mix up the numbers from 1 to 10, then work together to place them in order; for an extra challenge, remove one and ask your child to find the missing number. Celebrate persistence as well as correct answers with words like, “You looked carefully for the next number,” “You checked your work,” or “You kept trying until the chime was ready.”
