Helping Children Welcome Someone New with Kindness
Surprise can become curiosity and connection
When someone looks, sounds, or acts differently from what children expect, surprise is a natural first feeling. Fuzzi and Gram’s little dragon gives families a gentle way to practice pausing before making assumptions. Adults can guide children from surprise toward curiosity with simple questions such as, “I wonder how they are feeling,” or “What could help them feel safe here?”
Practice welcoming language children can use when they meet someone new: “Hi, I’m glad you’re here,” “Do you want to play?” or “Can I show you where something is?” Remind them that it is okay to give a new friend space and let them choose when to join in. Praise thoughtful actions with words like, “You were gentle,” “You noticed they felt shy,” or “You helped them feel included.”
