Building Map Skills With Landmarks and Directions

Children can use familiar places to make sense of where things belong

When Professor Hoo’s map gets mixed up, Fuzzi and Gram use what they know about familiar landmarks to put each place back where it belongs. Their adventure introduces early spatial thinking through simple ideas such as near, far, next to, and which way to go. As you read, ask, “What landmark helped Fuzzi and Gram?” or “Where should this place go on the map?”

Make a simple map of one familiar space together, such as a bedroom, a yard, or a route through your home. Add a few landmarks and let your child give directions using words like “next to,” “behind,” “left,” and “right.” Reinforce their spatial thinking with words like, “You used a landmark,” “Your directions helped me find it,” or “You noticed where things belong.”
