Turning Everyday Moments Into Imaginative Play

Pretend play helps children see new possibilities

Gram’s puddle shop shows children how a rainy-day splash can become the beginning of a whole new idea. Pretend play lets children experiment with roles, stories, and solutions without needing a perfect plan. As you read, ask, “What would you sell in a puddle shop?” or “What could this muddy splash become?” and follow your child’s imaginative answers.

Invite your child to open a pretend shop using safe, simple items such as paper, cups, blocks, or toys. They might invent a name, decide what they are selling, make signs, and welcome customers. Join in by asking curious questions instead of directing the play: “How much does that cost?” “What does it do?” or “Can I order one?” Praise their ideas with words like, “You made something new,” “You found a creative use for that,” or “I love how your story grew.”
