Getting Ready for Safe, Comfortable Rainy-Day Play

Dry feet and thoughtful choices help children enjoy the weather

Rosie’s missing rain boots give Fuzzi and Gram a reason to search carefully and think about what helps outdoor play feel safe and comfortable. Rainy weather can be fun when children have dry clothing, an adult nearby, and a plan for slippery spots. As you read, ask, “Where could Rosie’s boots be?” or “What helps us stay dry when we play in the rain?”

Before heading outside in wet weather, help your child choose weather-ready clothing and check that shoes or boots fit securely. Remind them to walk rather than run on slick surfaces and to come inside for dry socks and warm layers afterward. Reinforce healthy choices with words like, “You got ready for the weather,” “You walked safely through the puddles,” or “You listened to what your body needed.”
