Letting One Big Idea Become Many Adventures

Open-ended play invites children to decide what happens next

Fuzzi and Gram’s giant leaf becomes many different things because they let their imaginations lead. Open-ended play helps children practice flexible thinking, storytelling, and problem-solving without needing one correct answer. As you read, ask, “What would you turn the leaf into?” or “What could it become next?”

Offer a few simple, safe materials—blankets, cardboard, cushions, paper, or blocks—and invite your child to transform them into something new. Try asking open questions instead of giving directions: “What is this now?” “Who uses it?” or “What happens in your story?” Encourage their creativity with words like, “You gave that a new purpose,” “Your idea kept growing,” or “I love seeing what you imagined.”
