Practicing Patience When Something Feels Exciting
Waiting for the right moment is a skill children can build
Gram sees the surprise bags in the Treasure Tree and wants to open one right away. As he learns to wait, the story helps children understand that big excited feelings are normal—and that pausing for the right time can make a reward even more meaningful. As you read, ask, “Why was it hard for Gram to wait?” or “What helped him be patient?”
Practice waiting in small, supported ways at home: taking turns during a game, waiting for a timer before a snack, or saving a surprise for a planned moment. Help your child name the feeling and choose a strategy, such as taking a slow breath, counting, or finding something else to do while they wait. Reinforce progress with words like, “Waiting was hard, and you did it,” “You used a patient plan,” or “You made the surprise even more special.”
